Ep. 142 – Iona Morris
There should be a name for having a career so vast you can’t remember a goodly chunk of the roles.
Iona Morris’s actor father tried to dissuade her from a life of acting, but it clearly was not a lesson she listened to. Starting out in VO at a young age, Iona went on to be one of the earliest voices in anime’s debut in America, starring in roles in Robotech, Lupin The 3rd and Barefoot Gen in the early 1980s. But it was as Storm in the original X-Men Animated Series that lodged her firmly in the world of pop culture geekdom, and later roles in animation and video games would see her continue to work to this day.
Iona talks with Evan about the early days in “Japanimation”, being a black woman in VO over the course of nearly 50 years, and why direction and one-person plays are so appealing to her now. She also answers a question from David Bateson and explains how her unique geekiness plays into her voice career.
